The word “peridot” comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning gem. This August birthstone was valued in many ancient and medieval cultures. It appeared in priests’ jewelry as early as the second century BC and later in the chalices and churches of medieval Europe.
This bright “Green” colour of nature, is associated with harmony, good health, restful sleep, and peacefulness. Known as the stone of compassion, Peridot calms anger by giving renewal to all things.
The exquisite light green ancient, cosmic birthday also referred to as “Evening Emerald” shines both in the day and night. The Egyptians call it “gem of the sun” because it is believed to have healing powers.
When set in gold, this gem is said to protect the wearer from nightmares. Supposedly, it frees the mind of envious thoughts that can damage and strain relationships. Also, peridot is believed to help depression.
Peridot is the rare gem-quality variety of the common mineral olivine, which forms deep inside the Earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanoes. In Hawaii, peridot once symbolized the tears of Pele, the volcano goddess of fire who controls the flow of lava. Rarely, Peridot is also found inside meteorites.
Peridot only measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. So, while the raw crystal is prone to cracking during cutting, the finished gemstones are robust and easy to wear.
